about

This cover was mostly recorded in the summer heat of July 2006.

Shugo Tokumaru's "Night Piece" is an inventive album that I'd discovered the previous year before. From reading some reviews, I learned that he had largely recorded everything at home, using a bunch of random instruments (like tin can percussion). "The Mop" is an instrumental piece that sits right in the middle.

I had just installed Logic Pro on my computer and was trying to learn how to work around it. Recording a cover of "The Mop" seemed pretty simple and straightforward, since it had a relatively easy chord progression and only three elements (guitar chords, percussion and a synth melody line which I directly ripped off from a Japanese band called The Kitakaruizawas, who had done their own cover of the song). I recorded this version, bounced it to mp3 and after a few days of listening to it, kinda hated it. I deleted the Logic file, re-recorded a second version but found that I couldn't capture the vibe of the first version.

As such, the version presented here is actually mastered from that first bounced mp3, since that's the only trace I have left of the original recording.
