about

This is a cover of my friend Logan's song "Why Do the Trees Grow?", which comes from his 2009 album "Imagine You and Me" (the original can be found at loganrathbone.bandcamp.com).

At the time of recording, I was experimenting with a Yamaha 4-track cassette recorder I had bought off Craigslist fairly recently and decided to do a piano cover of Logan's song, which was originally played on a banjo. Opening up the family upright piano, I set up two mics on each side and recorded a couple takes of the song onto an old tape. Then, after I finished the vocals, I bought out my delay pedal and connected it to the recorder. What you hear in the finished track is basically the re-dubbed piano and vocals done in two tries, while I twisted the time and repeat knobs live, to sometimes add more echo or to add more of the saucer-like effect on parts of the chorus.
