This cover was recorded in two first takes (one guitar, one vocal), on Boxing Day 2006.

I'd just gone out to take advantage of a Boxing Day sale, returning home with a Shure SM57 microphone (my first "real" microphone), after having used a cheap Sony karaoke mic that had a weird built-in echo in previous recordings. I connected the microphone to my audio interface, turned on my computer and recorded the two takes in about 15 minutes.

Sufjan Stevens' "Michigan", from where the original song ("For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti") stems from, was largely recorded using a pair of SM57s. It remains one of my favourite albums to listen and return to, from time to time.
